The Step Back Jumper-

 

A step back jump shot is a move that can offer players a clean look at the rim, with a high percentage of going in.  This is due to the moves natural tendency to allow the shooter to stay on balance, without having to worry about a defender contesting the shot with any great success.  You’ll find that a great step back is characterized by a strong dribble or two towards the hoop or at a defender, and then a final hard dribble allowing the offensive player to stop their momentum, get their feet set, and aggresively jump backwards for the creation of space.  When the step back occurs, good players get their feet back under them with enough strength to shoot the ball like it’s a normal shot.

 

Essentially, if done correctly at the right speed and with the right footwork, it allows an offensive player the ability to create tons of space to do with as they please.

 

Many of todays great NBA scorers use the step back, and do so driving left or right.  Michael Jordan patented the move when driving to his left. Here are some examples:
